NEW DELHI: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Tuesday took a big step in honour of Neeraj Chopra, who won the historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The day the Javelin star Neeraj won the gold will be celebrated as National Javelin Day, AFI said. Neeraj won the gold medal on August 7, ending a long wait of 121 years for India's track and field. Therefore, August 7 is celebrated as Javelin Day every year.

⭐"To celebrate Javelin Throw Sports across the country, we will celebrate August 7 as Javelin Throw Day from next year," said Lalit Bhanot, chairman of the AFI's Planning Commission. The AFI affiliated organizations will host a javelin throw competition on this day. An inter-district competition will then be held and we will provide javelin equipment to all unions. The 2018 AFLI has been hosting the National Open Javelin Throw Championship.
"I am just happy to say that AFI has taken such a decision to commemorate my success," Neeraj said. I would be very happy if the young people in my country were inspired to take up athletics and especially javelin sports. '
